FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ON MARTIAL ARTS!

What is Karate-Do?
Karate-Do is a Japanese form of martial art/system for self-defense developed in Okinawa Island in Japan.  The term ‘Karate-Do’ literally means “the way of the empty hand,” referring to the fact that its practitioners do not use weapons to attack and defend, but only the hands, feet, and body parts.

Yet karate is much more beyond physical aspects in its philosophical and spiritual approach based on Bushido (Way of Samurai) as well as Zen Buddhist principles.

Through hard and disciplined training in karate, a Karate-ka (Karate practitioner) not only develops a strong body and mind but also perfects his character.

What is the main aim and purpose behind karate training?
The ultimate aim and purpose behind karate training are not to just excel in physical aspects of martial arts techniques, but to develop an overall development e.g. character, discipline, peace, and harmony through which you can reach the spiritual level possible.

What is the organization?
Nihon Karate-Do Shito-Ryu International Renshikan karate organization was founded for the promotion and preservation of traditional karate-do. More importantly, our karate is based on the tradition of Bushido (the way of the samurai). Our mission is to promote the way of karate throughout the world, with its true Budo philosophical aspects upon which it was founded.

What system or style of karate-do we teach?
We are practicing and propagating the ‘Shito-Ryu Karate-Do’ style integrating teachings of various styles of Karate. The system is incorporated with the best of these styles into one system.

What is the Shito-Ryu style of karate?
Shito-Ryu Karate mainly focuses on the correct development of
Kihon (basic techniques) which can be used in Kata (forms, techniques study), and executing it in Kumite (sparring). At our training, karate is not regarded as only a sport but more as a way of life-based on Bushido. Training cultivates the body, mind, and spirit that prepare you to deal with difficult and dangerous situations of life.

Can anyone join and train in karate?
Of-course Yes! Anyone can join and train in Karate. Requirements are continuous, hard, and disciplined training with full commitment and patience.  As long as that commitment is there, karate is for everyone regardless of age, gender, or origin.

Do I need special physical ability to start karate?
No! You do not require any special physical ability to start karate, in-fact you will enhance your physical ability through karate training. But if you have a special physical ability then it will be your additional benefit in training.

What is expected of me if I join?
Few things to remember. Karate is long-term training and not a short-term quick course. You need to be patient and committed to hard work, disciplined training, and attend classes regularly. You are expected to put your best efforts into training. You are also expected to demonstrate the respect, humility, and courtesy upon which karate’s tradition is founded. And of course, you are expected to pay your membership and training fees.

What will training consist of?
Karate training session usually begins with a warm-up, followed by various stretching exercises. The exercises are divided into three main components: Kihon Waza (basic techniques), in which you learn the basic Uke (blocks), Tsuki (punches), Keri (kicks), Tachi (stances), etc. At a later stage, you will be introduced to karate kata (techniques set forms), in which you practice and physically remember the various Kihon learned. Later you will be introduced to Kumite (sparring). Kumite will have one-step, two-step, three-step, and so on. Techniques with partners. Later free Kumite where your Kihon and kata techniques are matched against a real opponent. There will also be times when you are taught dojo etiquette and the more philosophical aspects of karate.

What are the benefits of traditional karate training?
Through Karate training one can benefit in multiple areas for body, mind, and spiritual cultivation. In physical areas, karate is good for the cardiovascular system, builds strong muscle and strengthens bones, develops good immunity and resistance to diseases which makes the body less susceptible to sickness and injury. In the mental aspect, karate helps develop patience, perseverance, discipline, concentration, focus as well as understanding and open-mindedness towards society. It nurtures one’s nature into calmness, peace, modesty and creates harmony amongst its practitioners and society.

How long does it take to learn karate?
Karate training is like boiling hot water. The more you heat the more it will boil. Training, more training, and much more training is the key point leading to a successful martial artist. The more you practice, the more you will improve for your entire life. There is no limit to perfect karate skills, no “final destination” at which you can arrive.

What is the Karate Belt system and how long does it take to earn a karate blackbelt?
At our organization, you shall progress through a series of belt levels (10th to 1st Kyu). After that, you are awarded a black belt, and progress through another 10 degrees of black belt (1st to 10th Dan). Belt examinations are held every 3-4 months of training and students can apply for the same. In total there are 10 examinations you must pass to attain a black belt grade (Sho Dan HO) and it takes nearly 4-5 years of training. From Sho Dan Ho to 1st Dan requires a minimum of one year of diligent training. It takes several years to attain each Dan grade level.  At higher levels, you will experience that karate is not to be learned but to live and it will be your way of life.

Is Karate-Do Uniform necessary in training?
Yes! It’s a part of the learning and discipline of the art. Karate uniforms (Do Gi) are usually available with a Karate instructor.
